Beginner's Guide

I have included the following steps for good health, but I hope you realize that each family will move through these steps at its own pace. If your budget is tight, you have little extra time, or you're uncertain how to cook with new (to you) methods, you can reasonably expect these steps to take longer. Don't feel badly -- our family has been working on these steps since 2002, and we still have a long way to go on several of these steps!  Consider these GOALS that you can shoot for!  Finally, you may wish to rearrange these steps into a better order for you.  Make this plan fit you!

  • Step 1: Learn about poor food choices.
  • Step 2: Learn about better food choices.
  • Step 3: Evaluate your budget.
  • Step 4: Evaluate your kitchen equipment.
  • Step 5: Evaluate your time.
  • Step 6: Find local sources of nutritious food.
  • Step 7: Learn to prepare kitchen staples.
  • Step 8: Clean out that junk food!
  • Step 9: Make a weekly menu.
  • Step 10: Make a list of daily and weekly kitchen jobs.

Healthy, easy, cheap... that's our goal!
